ENT · Larynx and airway: paraglottic space
Sample itemA supraglottic carcinoma invades a space lateral to the vestibular fold and ventricle, bounded by the thyroid cartilage laterally and the conus elasticus and quadrangular membrane medially. What is this space?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
A. Paraglottic space
The paraglottic space lies deep to the laryngeal mucosa, between the thyroid cartilage and the conus elasticus below and the quadrangular membrane above. Tumour spreading here can pass between the supraglottis and glottis and into the subglottis. Invasion upstages the tumour and may fix the cord.
Option by option
A. Paraglottic space (correct)
Correct. It connects the supraglottic, glottic and subglottic regions.
B. Reinke's space
Reinke's space is the superficial lamina propria of the cord.
C. Pre-epiglottic space
The pre-epiglottic space lies in front of the epiglottis.
D. Retropharyngeal space
The retropharyngeal space lies behind the pharynx.
