PSM · Biostatistics: multiple linear regression
Sample itemInvestigators want to predict birth weight, a continuous measurement, from maternal age, body mass index and haemoglobin, all considered together. Which technique is suitable?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
B. Multiple linear regression
Multiple linear regression relates a continuous outcome to several predictors at once and gives an adjusted coefficient for each. Simple linear regression has only one predictor. Kaplan-Meier analysis handles time-to-event data, and the chi-square test handles categorical variables.
Option by option
A. Chi-square test for trend
The chi-square test for trend is for categorical data.
B. Multiple linear regression (correct)
Correct. A continuous outcome with several predictors calls for multiple linear regression.
C. Kaplan-Meier analysis
Kaplan-Meier analysis estimates survival and does not predict a continuous outcome.
D. Simple linear regression
Simple linear regression includes a single predictor only.
