PSM · Maternal and child health: antenatal registration
Sample itemA woman's pregnancy is detected at 8 weeks. According to national guidance, by when should she be registered for antenatal care?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
D. Within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy
Pregnant women should be registered for antenatal care as early as possible, ideally within the first 12 weeks, so that at least four antenatal check-ups can be done and risks detected early. Early registration also begins iron, folic acid and tetanus protection in time.
Option by option
A. At 20 weeks of pregnancy
Twenty weeks is late and wastes the first trimester for screening and counselling.
B. At the time of labour
Registration at labour is unbooked care and is associated with higher risk.
C. At 28 weeks of pregnancy
Twenty-eight weeks leaves too little time for four visits and treatment of anaemia.
D. Within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy (correct)
Correct. Early registration is within the first 12 weeks.
